Palmerston North Hospital EDOA & MAPU
A new 750m² facility at Palmerston North Hospital provides Emergency Department Observation and Medical Assessment and Planning services. Maycroft delivered the building beside the operational emergency department, managing complex foundations and construction logistics within a critical hospital environment.
Palmerston North Hospital’s Emergency Department expansion delivered a new 750m² assessment and observation facility to help reduce pressure on the hospital’s busy ED. Built at the front of the existing department, the new building provides dedicated spaces for short-stay assessment and treatment, improving patient flow and reducing wait times.
The project included a 10-bed Emergency Department Observation Area and a 20-bed Medical Assessment and Planning Unit, allowing patients to be assessed, treated and discharged without unnecessary hospital admission. Early works also delivered a new mobility car park, retaining wall and associated site infrastructure to maintain accessible parking during construction.
Despite the technical complexity of the build, including three-stage concrete pours using a DOKA formwork system with tight tolerances for the structural steel frame, the project showcased Maycroft’s ability to deliver critical healthcare infrastructure while building new skills across the site team.
