Kimi Ora School, Naenae

Kimi Ora School, Naenae

December 2010
$5.4m

The new Kimi Ora School in Naenae is a state-of-the-art facility for students with high-need physical disabilities. Originally based in Thorndon, the school had outgrown its old facilities and was split across two sites: one alongside Naenae Intermediate and the other next to Evan’s Bay Intermediate. The new building at Naenae caters for 25 students and includes four classrooms, a hydrotherapy pool, sensory room, and therapy room.read more

Although the construction site was a clear greenfield, the location between two existing schools presented a challenge. Maycroft Construction’s expert coordination of more than 40 subcontractors onsite kept disruption to the adjoining schools at a minimum.

Kimi Ora is the first 5 Star Green Star Certified school in Wellington built under the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) Education Tool. It was certified on both build and design. We implemented green policies in the building process (such as how we removed rubbish and waste from the site) and created an energy-efficient building as the final product. This is an achievement we are immensely proud of and know the benefits for the Kimi Ora students will continue for the life of the building.

NZIA Sustainable Architecture Award

This building's sustainability is integral to the joy of its architecture. The controlled and considered handling of natural light, landscaping to integrate and mitigate, careful materials selection, pleasing low-impact finishes, and intelligent environmental systems epitomise a very well-rounded design approach. This project is a model for a sustainable architecture that cleverly and judiciously fuses finite resources with humanity.
