Centennial Flats

Centennial Flats

February 2015

The Centennial Flats in Berhampore have a rich history. Built in the 1930s, this development was the first of its kind in New Zealand. Previously, social housing had been provided in detached or semi-detached homes; the complex’s 46 units displayed a shift towards medium density, multi-storey living.

Housing New Zealand's upgrade of the Centennial Flats was part of a countrywide, ongoing programme to refurbish and structurally strengthen the Corporation's housing stock. For this project, Maycroft Construction was responsible for the multi-stage refurbishment and enhancement of the historically important social housing complex.read more

The exterior of the building was repaired and painted in line with the Category 1 status the Centennial Flats have on the Heritage New Zealand list. The internal areas were also upgraded with new kitchens, painting and floor coverings. Siteworks consisted of minor brickwork and fencing, as well as general gardening and landscaping works.

The Centennial Community Centre was also refurbished. Originally, the Centre provided a communal area for the residents, but it was converted to residential space in the 1980s. It has now been fully restored and the sun-filled, open room is once again at the heart of the community.

The construction works for this project included strengthening the foundations with reinforced concrete beams. The walls were also significantly strengthened using fibre-reinforced plastic in some areas and structural steel in others.

The Centennial Flats are an important part of New Zealand's past and future; Maycroft Construction were proud to contribute to its preservation.
