Celebrating our Apprentices

March 13, 2020

To celebrate the work and successes of our apprentices, our 18 carpentry apprentices gathered in Lower Hutt for our very first annual Apprentice Conference.

Throughout the year, our apprentices work towards completing their NZ Certification in Carpentry (Level 4). This develops their practical skills and knowledge required to construct, repair and install buildings required of a commercially competent carpenter. On-site training and experience with our project teams is involved as well as theory-based learning and refinement of practices.

“Our Apprentice Programme is invaluable for the growth of our team and capabilities in the industry and exceeds simply teaching people how to build. In addition to the on-site practical training and experiences, our apprentices develop well-rounded skills in wellbeing, leadership, and communication”. Andrew Smith, Director and Project Support Manager

Kicking off the conference with a visit to BRANZ, our apprentices were provided with an overview of the testing BRANZ conducts in relation to fire, structures, materials and building performance. Other tailored sessions included informative presentations on safety and financial skills.

The conference concluded with the presentation of Apprentice of the Year award (crafted by our Joinery Division) to Jacob Brenssell. The award recognises a high-potential apprentice who demonstrates excellence, commitment and reflection of the Maycroft standards and values. Jacob consistently works to a high standard and is demonstrating great leadership skills, willingness and drive to progress as a future leader in our business.
